DOM vs. HREW Tubing: Why Steel Choice Makes or Breaks a Rock Slider

Short answer: DOM (drawn-over-mandrel) tubing is cold-worked after welding, which gives it a refined seam, tighter tolerances, and meaningfully higher strength than plain HREW tube of the same size. For a part whose whole job is absorbing point impacts from rocks, that difference shows up on the very first hard hit.

What is DOM tubing?

DOM starts life as electric-resistance-welded (ERW) steel tube. It's then cold-drawn over a mandrel — a precision form inside the tube — which compresses and works the entire wall, including the weld seam. The result is a tube with near-uniform wall thickness, a seam that's structurally integrated rather than just fused, and significantly improved yield and tensile strength from the cold working.

What is HREW, and why is it cheaper?

HREW (hot-rolled electric-welded) tube is rolled from hot-rolled sheet and welded — and that's where the processing stops. It's fine for railings, furniture, and light brackets. It's also what a lot of budget "rock sliders" are made from, because it can cost half as much as DOM. The catch: the weld seam remains the weak line, and the softer material deforms more easily under point loads — exactly the kind of load a rock delivers.

Does wall thickness matter more than steel type?

They work together. A thick-wall HREW tube can outperform a thin-wall DOM tube in some loads, but the honest comparison is at equal size — and at equal size, DOM wins on strength and consistency. We build every D2 slider from .120" wall DOM: thick enough to shrug off repeated impacts, without ballooning the weight of the finished slider (each of ours is about 65 lbs with step plates).

The part nobody looks at: the mounts

Tube gets the attention, but sliders fail at the mounts first. A great tube on thin, ungusseted mounting plates just bends at the frame. Every D2 set uses .188" (3/16") frame plates with welded gussets, so the load a rock puts into the tube spreads across the frame instead of concentrating at a bolt hole. Combined with Grade 10.9 hardware, the mounting system is built to the same standard as the tube it carries.

How this shows up in our sliders

Both the 4Runner slider set (2010–2024) and the Tacoma slider set (2005–2023) use the same recipe: .120" DOM tube, .188" gusseted plates, dual-layer e-coat + powder coat.
