How Hard Is It to Install Rock Sliders on a 4Runner or Tacoma? A Realistic Guide

Short answer: if you can change your own brakes, you can install D2 rock sliders. Plan on an afternoon, basic hand tools, and ideally a second set of hands. The 4Runner set requires no drilling at all; the Tacoma set requires two drilled holes per side. Neither requires welding.

What tools do you need?

• Socket set and ratchet
• Torque wrench
• Floor jack (to lift and hold the slider while you start bolts)
• Jack stands if you prefer working with the truck raised
• Tacoma only: a drill and a quality bit for the two holes per side

Each slider weighs about 65 lbs with step plates, so a helper — or the floor jack doing the holding — makes the job dramatically easier.

How long does installation take?

Budget an afternoon for a first-time install. The workflow is the same on both trucks: unbox and lay out the hardware, position the slider on the jack, start all bolts loose, square the slider to the body line, then torque everything to spec. Rushing the alignment step is the most common mistake — loose-fit everything before you tighten anything.

What's different on the 4Runner?

The 2010–2024 4Runner sliders are 100% bolt-on: every mount lines up with existing factory frame holes. Two model-specific notes: they don't fit the Limited trim or the 2022 Sport, and on 2010–2013 trucks you'll remove the lower cladding before mounting.

What's different on the Tacoma?

The 2005–2023 Tacoma sliders use factory holes for most mounts, plus two drilled holes per side. Mark the locations with the slider held in position, drill, treat the bare metal with a rust-preventive paint or primer, and bolt up. It adds maybe twenty minutes per side — still no welding, still a driveway job.

Do you need to maintain rock sliders after install?

Minimal. Re-torque the hardware after your first few hundred miles and after hard trail use. The dual-layer e-coat + powder coat finish handles weather; if you gouge it down to steel on a rock (that's the slider doing its job), touch it up to keep corrosion out. Step plates unbolt if you ever want to refinish or wrap them.
